Will Breast Augmentation Surgery Leave Scars?

Breast augmentation remains the most common plastic surgery procedure for women in the United States, with nearly 330,000 breast augmentation procedures completed in 2018 alone. But you might hesitate over having this common procedure because of concerns over scarring.

At the Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, our founder, medical director, and lead surgeon, Dr. Husam Elias, provides a wide range of options for patients considering breast augmentation, including scarless surgery.

What types of scars typically result from breast augmentation?

We always plan breast implant surgery to provide the best results with the least amount of scarring possible. There are three possible incision placements for traditional breast implants:

Making the incision in the crease underneath the breast is typically used for fast, cost-effective breast implant placement. It’s appropriate for women with not much sagging of their breasts or for those who want a breast lift at the same time as their breast implants.

An expert surgeon like Dr. Elias can also go in through your armpit, creating a small, mostly noticeable scar as he places your implants in the desired position.

You can also opt for an incision around the nipple, which allows Dr. Elias to center the implant precisely. He may also use this method of implanting if you want a simultaneous nipple lift.

All of these locations help to hide any scarring that appears as a result of breast augmentation.

Dr. Elias discusses your options with you, as well as expectations and what aftercare you need to minimize scars. You might be able to use silicone sheets or scar gels to help reduce the appearance of scars. Massaging the scars can also help reduce their physical appearance over time.

Scarless breast augmentation

Dr. Elias also offers scarless breast augmentation, which is a procedure designed to give you the look you want without having incisions in your upper torso. Instead, Dr. Elias makes a tiny incision in your belly button and then threads deflated saline implants up to your breasts with the help of a specialized tool called an endoscope.

This procedure is called transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA). Once the implants are in place and centered properly behind your nipples, Dr. Elias can safely inflate them with saline and position them for the best appearance. Many women prefer this technique because it requires no surgical incisions in the breasts or the armpits.
