What Is a Genioplasty?

Genioplasty is a fancy name for a common procedure: chin surgery. You may seek genioplasty to correct a chin shape that makes you feel self-conscious and undermines the balance of your face, making other features look out of place.

At Southern California Center for Surgical Arts in Sherman Oaks, California, Dr. Husam Elias performs genioplasty as part of an entire suite of cosmetic and maxillofacial surgeries. Trust his expertise and eye to create a profile you can be proud of.

Here’s what you should know before signing up for genioplasty.

Who should have genioplasty?

Chin surgery offers corrections for a chin that just doesn’t suit your profile. You may desire a change in your chin’s shape due to:

Genioplasty may not be a common term for you, but the surgery itself is done all the time. Dr. Elias is a skilled practitioner who can effectively improve your facial symmetry.

The surgery is usually most successful on people who have a chin that seems too small in proportion to other facial features, particularly your nose. A small chin can make your nose look extra-long, for example.

You do want to be in generally good health prior to signing up for surgery. At your consultation, Dr. Elias does a thorough physical evaluation and review of your medical history.

What does genioplasty entail?

As a skilled cosmetic and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Elias is exceptionally qualified to perform genioplasty.

If you desire movement of the chin forward, he readjusts the position of the bone supporting your chin. He usually takes bone from the jaw just behind the teeth to extend the chin. Some people may require dental work to enhance the look of the chin and teeth, which Dr. Elias is qualified to provide.

He may also remove a portion of your chin bone to push the chin backward. Side-to-side movement of the chin and making the chin longer or shorter are other possible ways to sculpt your chin’s look.

Dr. Elias performs genioplasty while you’re under general anesthesia, so you’re asleep for the entire surgical procedure. He places the incision for the surgery inside the lower lip or under the chin. Scarring is minimal and not obvious after it heals.

You’ll likely have swelling, redness, and some bruising in the first few days following genioplasty. These side effects usually subside on their own. Recovery takes 10-14 days. During recovery, you’ll want to follow our post-operative instructions and attend your follow-up appointments to ensure a successful outcome.

Will I be satisfied with the results?

Prior to your procedure, you sit down for a consultation with Dr. Elias, and together, you review your aesthetic goals. He’ll review exactly what to expect during the procedure and afterward, so you have realistic expectations and an understanding of what your new profile will entail.

Research shows that people are generally quite pleased with the results of genioplasty. One small study showed 100% satisfaction with the results from genioplasty, with participants reporting higher self-esteem as a result. In another study of 37 people, 35 of the surgical participants reported “very good” results from their genioplasty while the other two reported “good” results.

Dental implants are a functional and aesthetic way to replace missing teeth. Not everyone is a candidate for this restoration due to lacking bone mass in the jaw or concerns about invasive surgery. Mini dental implants are an alternative.

When Is the Right Time for Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery?

Cleft lip and cleft palate -- or both -- are some of the most common birth defects. Since these disfigurements can be repaired with surgery, your first question may be WHEN those procedures can be done. Here’s what the experts recommend.

Breathe Easier With a Rhinoplasty

A nose job can do more than give you a more pleasing profile. The surgery can enhance your sinus health so you breathe easier each and every day. Learn why you might benefit from a rhinoplasty, even if you’re OK with how your nose looks.

Secure Your Dentures with Mini Dental Implants

Dental implants provide a natural-looking replacement for missing teeth, but not everyone can tolerate invasive surgery or has the necessary bone to hold the posts. Mini dental implants are an alternative, even when you wear dentures.
