Tips for a Speedy Recovery

No matter your surgery, caring for a wound is always a labor of love. Finding a few days to rest, relax and rejuvenate may be difficult in our busy Los Angeles lifestyle, but it is vital in your speedy and successful recovery that you give your body the rest it needs.

In any case, if you experience symptoms and side-effects that include extreme pain over a long period of time, excessive bleeding or anything not discussed between you and your surgeon, it is important to seek immediate medical care to avoid any further complications.

Though Dr. Elias will go over specific care instructions for your condition and procedure, here are our general Do’s & Don’ts for a speedy surgical recovery:

Do’s

  • Get Lots of Rest: Putting your body under stress does nothing but elongate your recovery time. We recommend having a friend or loved one stay with you after surgery to help with anything you might need for the few days following surgery. Allow yourself to fully recover by letting your body focus only on healing.
  • Hydrate: Water is your body’s best resource in fighting anything from a sickness to a surgical scar. Staying hydrated and allowing your body to flush toxins out of your system more regularly than usual by urination will allow you to speed up the recovery process and keep your body functioning at a healthy level.
  • Take Prescribed Medication: Many patients avoid pain medication, and in many cases we understand this reaction! However, pain after surgery needs to be managed in order to keep your body’s focus on healing. Further, any antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication will help your body fight infection and swelling to speed up recovery.

Don’ts

  • Push Yourself to Work Out: Exercising is such a powerful tool for keeping your body healthy, but after surgery we recommend easing back into an active lifestyle. After an incision has been made in your body and trauma caused within, a lot of your blood is rerouted to the site of surgery to form clots and scabs to heal the skin. When you exercise, your blood pressure and heart rate elevate and blood is sent to your extremities. When so much blood is being used at once, focus of your body can be drawn away from the site of healing, and you may experience nausea, dizziness or as though you might faint. Stop exercising immediately if you experience any of those symptoms.
  • Put any strain on your body: Lifting heavily around the house or in the gym, forcing your body to exert extra energy is detrimental to the speed of your recovery. Lifting the vacuum upstairs or carrying boxes around the house are activities that can either wait until you are healed or can be asked of friends and loved ones. We recommend you move around several times a day, taking quick walks around your house or your block, but more than that should be avoided until you are feeling stronger.
  • Overreact: You are going to be experiencing pain, discomfort and frankly a little bit of blood and ooze that you are certainly not used to following your surgery. Overreacting and causing yourself extra stress will elongate your recovery as well. Try to give yourself time to relax and do things for yourself, like reading a book, watching your favorite show or anything else that helps you feel calm and at ease. Keeping a calm mind helps to mold a healthy body!
