Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

Teeth are the measure of a healthy lifestyle, and consistent oral hygiene that most people want to make sure are functional, healthy and beautiful. Many of the patients that meet with Dr. Husam Elias are looking to stop covering their mouths and avoiding smiling in photos, but they don’t know what to do about their missing or damaged teeth. At Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, we recommend that you look into the possibility of dental implants and crowns to modify this look. Dental implants can change your life since they fill in the gaps and reveal a beautiful, structured smile. But the question we often receive is, are dental implants, right for me?

Why Many People Don’t Know if They Need Them

The idea of getting these dental implants can be a little confusing if you’re not familiar with their benefits or what they look like, exactly. Dr. Elias talks to patients every day about dental implants because they’re not just about the cosmetic appearance of the teeth. The health benefits for your jawbone, gums, and function of your teeth are important. When we talk about implants, we share these benefits with patients because most of you don’t know there are mechanical purposes to them. We’ll start with their look and move into their function. These implants are the best restorative option in oral surgery right now.

So, what do dental implants look like?

Made of titanium metal, dental implants are rodlike structures that slightly resemble long screws we put into the gums and anchor into the jawbone. Once these implants are in place, we then cap them off and add the natural looking crowned tooth on top. Implants are made to replace a single missing tooth or as a bridge to replace multiple teeth. No one will ever notice the difference!

If you’re wondering whether or not implants are the right thing for you to consider, here are the base issues we can avoid or things we can improve with the use of dental implants.

Bone health and density are reduced the longer you wait to replace these missing teeth. Exposed jawbone and gums need to be capped off to invigorate bone strength. Replace your missing teeth with these implants to make sure the bone doesn’t deplete and cause pain.
Facial structure is compromised when missing or cracked teeth haven’t been fixed. If teeth are left to change positions to fill in the space left over, we see aesthetic changes in our natural features; this happens when teeth crowd. Implants can restore facial structure or help you avoid the problem in the first place.

Chewing function with shifting teeth is an issue we find in patients considering dental implants. When teeth shift, your natural bite is thrown off balance meaning inconvenient spacing makes maintaining clean and plaque-free teeth nearly impossible. When we cannot find balance in chewing, muscles within the jaw are stressed and strain leads to pain in TMJ muscles.

Your Consultation Will Help You Decide

While dental implants fix most of these potential issues, they are not usually a quick procedure. Dental implants can take months to set, heal and complete. During your initial consultation for dental implants, Dr. Elias will take x-rays and various scans that measure bone density as well as an in-depth medical history before recommending dental implants.

Singular implants take time, but there are other options that Dr. Elias can offer, such as our Teeth-In-An-Hour procedure. This procedure implants a full set of teeth after x-rays and the final mold of the jaw and gums. We add a few implant posts to the gums on top of which we place the fully formed dental prosthetic. This option gives you a full set of lost teeth that acts as a permanent denture.
